Volunteer firefighters play host to Russians

The Savage Volunteer Fire Company recently spent seven days as the host of 11 members of a Russian fire officer's delegation who were in the U.S. as part of an Organization for American/Soviet Exchange program.

The Russian officers were impressed with the smooth running volunteer system that stood in sharp contrast to their firefighting operation, which is run more like a national military organization. Volunteers are used only in rural settings.

During their stay in Savage the Russian visitors toured fire stations throughout Maryland and visited the Fire Museum in Lutherville, the National Air and Space Museum and Arlington National Cemetery.

Visiting local shopping malls to purchase gifts was a popular activity. The Russian firefighters will also carry home T-shirts, baseball caps and patches they received from the Savage volunteers.
