Marc Rey

School: Glenelg High School

Hometown: Ellicott City

Age: 17

Grade: Senior

His accomplishments: He's the leader of The Hindered, a funk-metal-reggae band that performs at charity concerts for various organizations, including Grassroots, Amnesty International and the Maryland Commission for the Homeless. He nTC plays on the varsity soccer and tennis teams and performs for the school's jazz band. He's also part of the peer mediation team as well as the Human Relations Committee, which sponsored a Cultural Awareness Week earlier this year.

"He's just an outstanding person," said Ruth Drucker, guidance counselor. "I've observed him in the peer mediation procedure, and he just seems to take charge. He knows his own values and his own priorities, and he's not afraid to express them."

His comments: I've learned a lot coming to Glenelg from Wilde Lake Middle School. It's given me a whole new perspective. I've had a lot of experience dealing with prejudice, and it's taught me how to deal with people. The peer mediation program has worked well. This year, there are a lot less fights and more open discussions.

His goal: He will enroll at the University of Southern California next year and plans to study studio guitar. "I hope to be a professional musician," he says.
