Gillick adjusts, keeps Blue Jays' tradition intact Titles aren't grown only on the farm BASEBALL

May 09, 1993

TORONTO -- They used to call him "Stand Pat" because he was willing to play the hand he dealt himself. But don't be misled.

Presumably Bell has also been pulling his bat off the ball.

A Minny offense

The Minnesota Twins have been struggling offensively most of the season. Through last week's series with the Orioles they had hit only 15 home runs, 12 of them by Kirby Puckett, Kent Hrbek and Dave Winfield.

Of the other three, two were hit in consecutive at-bats by Pedro Munoz against the Orioles 12 days ago in Baltimore. But those were the only RBI for Munoz in his first 61 at-bats and, with Shane Mack (.206) and Winfield (.202) also in a funk, the Twins have been languishing.

But manager Tom Kelly's team has plenty of time to regroup -- nobody is going to run away and hide in the AL West.

Results needed

Cubs manager Jim Lefebvre hasn't been too impressed with TC left-hander Dan Plesac, the former Milwaukee reliever who was signed as a free agent last winter.

"You just have to look at the results," Lefebvre said last week. "He always talks about how he wants to pitch in tough spots. To pitch in tough spots, you have to show some results."

Opponents were hitting .339 against Plesac, who had a 6.91 ERA. "I've gotten in some trouble and haven't made a good pitch to get out," admitted Plesac. "The main thing that counts is the bottom line.

"But I've never been more confident or felt better physically. Sometimes it's hard to be patient, but I know what I'm capable of doing."

4( Lefebvre just hopes Plesac does it.

Quick hits

* Winfield played less than eight full years with San Diego, and hasn't played there since 1980, but he's still the Padres' all-time RBI leader (626).

* Tony Gwynn, who's in his 12th year with the Padres, should pass Winfield around the All-Star break.

* Owner Marge Schott says the Reds have embarrassed her so far this year. Does that mean they're even?

* Everybody has their favorite nickname for the brash and unpredictable Philadelphia Phillies. "We just call them 'The Gang,' " said Ray Miller, ex-Orioles and current Pittsburgh Pirates pitching coach.

* Ex-Oriole Dennis Martinez is talking like somebody who would like to be traded by the Montreal Expos.

* The folks in New York, who take great pride in the futility of thoriginal "Amazing Mets," are not too excited about the current edition of their team dueling the Florida Marlins for last place.

* Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg made a throwing error last Wednesday, his first such miscue since July 4, 1990 -- a span of 393 games and 1,298 assists.
