Anne Arundel Community College conducted its annual sports banquet this week, and the following athletes received awards:
Dean William W. Evans Award (to the outstanding female scholar-athlete): Tracy Tobin, St. Mary's. Tobin will attend Florida State.
Dr. John S. Laycock Award (to the outstanding male scholar-athlete): Steve Downey, Mount St. Joseph. Downey will attend UMBC.
Special Award For Three-Sport Athletes: Lisa Purkins, Glen Burnie. Purkins played soccer, basketball and softball, and also served as a student trainer.
Louis L. Siegert Award (to outstanding female athlete of the year): Tracy Tobin, St. Mary's. Tobin was an All-South selection in lacrosse and an All-Region XX selection in soccer.
Dr. David S. Jenkins Award (to outstanding male athlete of the year): Jody Haislip, North County. Haislip was named All-American and All-Region XX in soccer. He leaves as the school's all-time leading scorer with 37 goals and 18 assists.
Women's basketball: Most Valuable Players -- Tammy Brown, Broadneck; Tiffany Clayton, Arundel. Most Improved Player -- Kim Smith, Southern. Unsung Hero -- Ann Heiser, Severna Park.
dTC Men's basketball: Most Valuable Player -- Eugene Slocum, Annapolis. Most Improved Player -- Jim Flahavin, Mount St. Joseph. Unsung Hero -- Jason Clarke, Broadneck.
Golf: Most Valuable Player -- Kevin Richardson, South River. Most Improved Player -- Chris Haag, Upper Dublin (Pa). Unsung hero -- John Lowden, North County.
Women's lacrosse: Most Valuable Player -- Tracy Tobin, St. Mary's. Most Improved Players -- Emily Chones, Annapolis; Ilene Lipsitz, Annapolis. Unsung Hero: Kristy Moltz, South River.
Men's lacrosse: Most Valuable Player -- Chris Stauder, Annapolis. Most Improved Player -- Steve Krupinsky, St. Mary's. Unsung Hero -- Derek Reem, Glen Burnie.
Softball: Most Valuable Player -- Stacy Reynolds, Northeast. Most Improved Player: Rebecca Almon, South Dade (Fla). Unsung Heroes: Amy Fichter, Boyertown (Pa.); Holly Hladycz, Broadneck.
Baseball: Most Improved Player: Rich Ganz, Severna Park. Unsung Hero: Frank Updike, Queen Anne's. The baseball team's Most Valuable Player will be chosen after the Region XX Tournament.
