Grant to help Odenton area put shoppers in empty stores

The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce has received a $12,000 state grant to help promote business in Greater Odenton, the organization announced yesterday.

The money comes from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and will be used by the chamber to recruit more businesses to the community.

Marcia Hall, executive director of the chamber, said the organization has been waiting for word on the grant, which totals $12,200, for about a year.

It stems from a consultant's report that concluded many Odenton residents leave the community to shop -- even to buy routine items such as milk and bread.

Since then, the chamber has been on a campaign to turn that around and fill empty stores, including several in the Odenton Shopping Center.

Ms. Hall said the money would be used to develop a real estate directory of all commercial space in Odenton, hold meetings involving property owners and real estate agents, and design a brochure that will be used to market Odenton.

A Odenton Business Recruitment Project will hold an introductory meeting Wednesday, June 2, to acquaint property owners, real estate agents and leasing agents with the project.

The meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Western District Police Station on Telegraph Road.

Anyone interested in attending should call Ms. Hall at 672-3422.

Homeless man charged with burglary

County police arrested a homeless man on burglary charges after he was found in a Severn home Sunday night.

Police charged Ivy Johnson with burglary, breaking and entering and destruction of property.

Police said they arrived at the house in the 8200 block of Clearwater Court about 11 p.m. to find the front door open and Mr. Johnson asleep on the couch.

The house wasn't ransacked and nothing was reported missing.
