Mandy Cody, 17, of Pasadena

School: Northeast High School

Accomplishments, interests: Mandy is the president of the National Honor Society, was a member of the school math team and participated in the county's Mentorship Program at the Naval Academy's Aerospace Department.

In October, she was one of six county students chosen to attend a space shuttle launch arranged by former Rep. Tom McMillen's office, an experience Mandy says "was amazing."

Her interest in science is supported by her participation in activities such as a Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at the University of Maryland at College Park last year and the past two Science and Engineering Fairs sponsored by Anne Arundel Community College.

Last year, she received a second-place award at the fair for her biochemical experiment -- researching the relationship between certain aquatic plants and plants found on land.

Outside school, Mandy plays softball for the Lake Shore Athletic Association and belongs to the League of Maryland Horsemen.

In the fall, she will begin attending Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University where she will major in either aerospace or mechanical engineering.

Her love of flying is setting her up for her next challenge: obtaining a pilot's license by the time she graduates from college.

Comments: Of her outlook, Mandy says, "Life is what you make of it."
