Officials have identified the man killed during an attempted holdup of a Millersville Wendy's restaurant early yesterday morning as Kevin Earl Williams, 21, of the 1700 block of Meade Circle Road in Severn.

Gerald M. Albright of Glen Burnie, a Wendy's employee, stabbed Williams when the man attacked him with a knife, police said. Williams had entered the store in the 8200 block of Veterans Highway, less than a mile from Anne Arundel County police headquarters, before the 10 p.m. closing and hid in the ceiling of the men's restroom.

The drive-through closed at 11 p.m. Shortly afterward, Williams accosted employee Genevieve M. Giuliano. Holding her at knifepoint, he took her to the rear of the store, where Mr. Albright was cleaning the cooking area, officials said.

Williams forced the employees into a back office, where store manager Sandra Horton was counting the night's receipts.

Mr. Albright, 39, armed himself with a knife. When the suspect lunged at him with his own knife, Mr. Albright stabbed him in the chest. Williams ran into the parking lot of Old Mill Plaza Shopping Center and collapsed. He was taken to North Arundel Hospital and pronounced dead just after 1 a.m.

A spokeswoman for Wendy's corporate headquarters, which includes restaurants in Baltimore, Washington and Northern Virginia, said she had no comment.

No charges have been filed against Mr. Albright. The slaying is being reviewed by the state's attorney's office, county police said.
