W. Maryland wins playoff, section title

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Western Maryland (11-5) won its second consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference Southwest Section softball title yesterday with a 4-2, eight-inning victory at Franklin & Marshall (15-9) in a one-game playoff.

Doubles by Laura Everhart and Carolyn Kelsey and a triple by Tine- College softball

L ka Ilyes produced the winning runs in the top of the eighth.

Junior Marilyn Naas limited the Diplomats to four hits for her seventh win of the season.

The playoff was necessary because both teams finished 8-2 in the MAC-Southwest and split their regular-season doubleheader.

Western Maryland advanced to the MAC championship today and tomorrow at Garrett Field in Willow Street, Pa.

The Green Terrors open play in the double-elimination tournament today at 5:30 p.m. against Southeast Section winner Muhlenberg.
