Redskins draw Cowboys in Monday night opener Season kickoff is Sept. 6 at RFK

Richie Petitbon sounded like a fan yesterday when he saw the Washington Redskins' 1993 schedule.

Petitbon, who had expected the Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys to play host to the San Francisco 49ers in the Monday night opener, found out he'll be making his head-coaching debut against the Cowboys in the first Monday night game, Sept. 6 at RFK Stadium.

Even though the Redskins are 1-6 in Monday night openers (including a loss at Dallas last Sept. 7), Petitbon says he's looking forward to it.

"It's a good ratings game for ABC," he said. "I'm excited about it. It'll be a good opener.

"Why not play them right at the beginning? You find out about yourself real quick. I like opening at home," he said.

The only time the Redskins won a Monday night opener was in 1972 when they beat the Vikings, 24-21. George Allen was the coach and Petitbon was a safety for the Redskins.

"Maybe I should go back and play," Petitbon said.

In addition to the Dallas opener on Labor Day night, the Redskins play five other national TV games. They play three Monday night games, a Sunday night game, a Saturday game and a Friday, New Year's Eve special at 3 p.m. They also play the day after Christmas in Dallas.

"At least we don't play on Thanksgiving," Petitbon said.

If nothing else, the schedule shows that the NFL expects the Redskins to bounce back from last season's 9-7 record despite the departure of coach Joe Gibbs and the loss of four free agents.

The Redskins-Cowboys is one of the league's top rivalries, and the last meeting, Dec. 15, was a classic.

Jason Buck knocked the ball out of Troy Aikman's hands and Danny Copeland recovered for the deciding touchdown in the fourth quarter of a 20-17 Redskins victory after Emmitt Smith tried to pitch the ball out of the end zone.

The Cowboys argued that Aikman's arm was moving forward when Buck hit him and it should have been an incomplete pass.
