Columbia CC prevails in MSGA team matches

The pairing of Richard Holland-Dan McAndrews won three points at Nassawango Country Club to complete an 11-7 Columbia CC triumph in the championship round of the annual team matches of the Maryland State Golf Association yesterday.

Five of the six pairings resulted in 3-0 decisions, Columbia winning three of them. At Nassawango, located in Berlin, with all results in but the last pairing, Columbia held a 9-7 lead.

This included the point that former Middle Atlantic, District Amateur, and two-time club champion Holland and McAndrews collected for winning the front nine, and when they won the back to sweep the match, it ensured the decision.

Glenn Mitchell and Bill Scott, seniors who -- with Marty West III, among others -- had been a part of Columbia's first MSGA team victory in 1973, defeated Todd Richardson-John Boston, 2-1, in the only pairing that did not wind up 3-0.

Mitchell won the seventh hole with a birdie, the team won the eighth and lost the ninth to get one point for winning the front nine. On the back, Nassawango went 2-up when Richardson made a remarkable birdie at the 17th, but they lost the 18th.

Richardson drove left of the stream at the bottom of a hill on the 290-yard 17th, then hit a wedge shot over a line of trees, the ball stopping 18 inches from the cup. At the finish, they got a point for winning the back nine.

The championship was Columbia's sixth, all of them since 1973, in a tournament that dates back to 1925. The Country Club of Maryland has won the most titles, 10, followed by Congressional CC, nine, and Columbia.

This marked Nassawango's second final-round appearance, the other coming against Congressional in 1990. This was the Eastern Shore club's fourth straight visit to the final eight, the other two losses coming in Baltimore area finals -- to Chantilly Manor and to the CC of Maryland.

At Nassawango Country Club Jack Skilling-Geoff Robertson def. Charlie Houts-J. B. Webster, 3-0; Henri deLozier-Dan Tate lost to Jeri Lynch-Phil Turner, 0-3; Richard Holland-Dan McAndrews def. Shorty Harmon-Terry White, 3-0.

At Columbia CC Dan Esposito-Marty West III, def. Shane Long-Marty Naugle, 3-0; Glenn Mitchell-Bill Scott def. Todd Richardson-John Boston, 2-1; Perky Cullinane-Ken Foster lost to Clyde Marriner-Bill Sterling, 0-3.
