Woman seriously hurt as car hits trees

A Westminster woman remained in serious but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after the car she was driving struck two trees shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday, police said yesterday.

Tammy Lynn Maphis, 26, of the 2600 block of Birdview Road was driving east on Hook Road near Bollinger Road when she lost control of the vehicle and hit the trees, state police in Westminster reported.

Troopers said they did not have information on how Ms. Maphis was injured.

Martin's supermarkets celebrate Earth Day

Thousands of Martin's supermarket shoppers have pitched in and recycled plastic bags, which the store chain is returning to communities in the form of park benches made from recycled plastic grocery bags and recycled wood as an Earth Day project.

In Carroll County, a bench was donated to Piney Run Park in Eldersburg.

Martin's is giving one bench to each store community with $200 for trees to plant around the bench.

Carroll County resident helps organize meeting

National Professional Billing Services Inc. will participate in the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland's annual meeting from Thursday to Saturday at the University Conference Center in College Park.

Nina Dustin of Carroll County, National Professional Billing Services' vice president of marketing, will coordinate activities for this event.
