25 Years Ago (week of April 14-20, 1968):

* Gerald R. Ford (R-Mich.), minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, was the featured speaker at the annual Howard County Republican Dinner held at Turf Valley Country Club. The dinner was the official kickoff for the 1968 campaign. In his after-dinner remarks, Rep. Ford called for "new [national] leadership . . . willing to compromise partisan principles for the good of the country."

* The Ellicott City Volunteer Fire Department received authorization from the county commissioners to go ahead with the purchase of a new ladder truck and an addition to the fire house, even though these expenditures were beyond the organization's annual budget. The required $100,000 would be borrowed from a local bank at 5 percent interest, and repaid by means of a fire tax for the 2nd District.
