Capital budget hearing set for today

A public hearing on Annapolis' proposed $11 million capital improvement budget is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today at the Eastport Volunteer Fire station, 814 Bay Ridge Avenue.

The proposed budget for the next fiscal year calls for creating a park along Admiral Drive, replacing the city's 100-year-old water line and upgrading a wastewater treatment plant.

The City Council is scheduled to adopt the budget at its regular meeting Monday.

Among the big-ticket items in the budget are plans to buy a 7.6-acre site owned by radio station WNAV for a park on Admiral Drive.

The owner, Jacob Einstein, has offered to finance the bulk of his $1.6 million asking price, while the city would pay $600,000 through open-space funds, said Emory Harrison, the city's central services director.

Man, 26, charged with assault in brawl

A 26-year-old Annapolis man was arrested on two counts of assault and disorderly conduct after a brawl in an Eastport public housing project Wednesday night, city police said.

Annapolis police arrived at Newtowne Drive shortly after 9 p.m. to find about 75 people milling about in the street. One man had pinned down another man, who was holding a kitchen knife, police said.

When he was released, the man with the knife began to yell and shove his way through the crowd.

Annapolis police arrested the man, identified as Cornelius K. Thomas of the 700 block of Newtowne Drive. The other man, Charles Mason, also of the 700 block of Newtowne Drive, was not seriously hurt, police said.

* Edgewater: Burglars took $1,695 worth of jewelry from a home in the 100 block of Mill Swamp Road between 5:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday.
