IND surprises No. 2 Spalding, 1-0

Tiffany Wilkinson scored on a fielder's choice in the first inning for the only score of the game to lead No. 13 Institute of Notre Dame (5-3) past No. 2 and previously undefeated Spalding (5-1), 1-0, yesterday at IND.

Christa Engleman pitched a complete game for the Indians, giving up only two hits.

* John Carroll 2, Havre de Grace 1. Senior Bonnie Lawson (4-1) pitched a no-hitter, giving up one earned run, four walks and striking out 11 as host John Carroll (4-1) defeated Havre de Grace (3-2).

In the sixth, Lawson walked senior Rebecca Hawkins. Hawkins moved up to second on a wild pitch and took third on senior Kerri Bowers' groundout. Senior Bobbi Zachery laid down a bunt and was thrown out at first, but Hawkins beat the throw home to score.


* North County 7, Queen Anne's 0. Senior right-hander Joe York pitched a no-hitter, leading No. 8 North County (7-1, 5-1) over host Queen Anne's in an Anne Arundel County Bay Division game.

York walked four and struck out 10 for the Black Knights. His offensive support came from Mike Wooden, who went 4-for-4, and Bobby Christopher, who a hit a three-run home run to spark a four-run third inning.

* Glen Burnie 3, Severna Park 2. Host Glen Burnie (2-4) knocked off No. 14 Severna Park (2-4), rallying for two runs in the sixth inning. Severna Park's Brad Ruffell walked in the tying run and hit a batter to force in the go-ahead run.

Glen Burnie's Shawn Mahaney, making his first start of the year, gave up four hits and struck out five in going the distance.
