Bell Atlantic's net gains

Earnings for Bell Atlantic Corp., the parent of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. of Maryland, rose 22.3 percent in the first quarter as the result of cost-cutting, interest savings, and increased revenues in its telephone and cellular business.
