Karen Brown, 18, of Olde Mill

School: Old Mill High School

Accomplishments/Interests: Karen is in the top 1 percent of her class, the treasurer in the National Honor Society and a member of the Key Club, the Math Team, the Prom Promise Committee and president of her school's chapter of Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD).

As part of her work with the Prom Promise Committee, Karen and fellow students have been instrumental in providing forms that students sign, promising not to drink and drive on prom night.

Karen is an active member of the Severna Park United Methodist Church.

She is in the youth group and a Bible study group there, and has been a Sunday school teacher and aide.

Recently honored by the Severna Park Optimist Club for her community service achievements, Karen is on the Student Alcohol and Drug Advisory Committee for the county's Board of Health and has done volunteer for the Maryland Special Olympics.

The last two summers, she spent a week with the Appalachia Service Project, a program that assists with the repair and

renovation of homes of underprivileged residents in Appalachia. She plans to be involved in that activity again this summer.

Karen was recently named Key Scholar for Villa Julie College, qualifying her for a four year full-tuition scholarship to Villa Julie.

She plans to pursue a career in pharmaceutical medicine.
