2 men arrested 8 pounds of pot confiscated GLEN BURNIE

April 16, 1993

State police arrested one man Wednesday evening and another yesterday morning in separate drug-related incidents and confiscated more than eight pounds of marijuana -- including five pounds from a passenger at BWI Airport, authorities said.

Randy D. Barton, 40, of Phoenix, was arrested shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday when he got off a flight at Baltimore Washington International Airport. He was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and conspiracy.

Authorities said they received a tip that he was carrying drugs into Maryland, and troopers from the Bureau of Drug Enforcement stopped him in the airport concourse. After a police dog detected narcotics, police said they obtained a search warrant and opened the man's suitcase.

Inside, they said they found five pounds of marijuana, seven bottles of methadone and drug paraphernalia. The man was being held yesterday in the Anne Arundel County Detention Center in lieu of $25,000 bond.

In another incident shortly before 1 a.m. yesterday, police said a trooper from the Glen Burnie barracks stopped a car on the Baltimore Beltway near Interstate 97.

The driver, identified as Kenneth R. Dovell Jr., 20, of the 200 block of Jay Court in Glen Burnie, was arrested after police said they found his license had been suspended and that the registration to his 1985 Nissan pickup truck had expired.

Police said they searched the truck and found three compressed balls of marijuana, each weighing more than one pound.

Mr. Dovell was charged with motor vehicle violations, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on his own recognizance by a District Court commissioner.
