After nine seasons, Joe Baker has been dismissed as boys varsity basketball coach at Calvert Hall.

In a prepared statement released yesterday, Baker said: "Brother William Johnson, principal of Calvert Hall, has dismissed me as the head basketball coach. He indicated to me a desire for a change of direction of the program.

"An evaluation of my performance by Lou Eckerl, athletic director, states, 'Team academic performance, team conduct and behavior, good sportsmanship, dedication, hard work and program organization were all maintained as usual'. I have no further comment on this matter."

L Johnson is on vacation and could not be reached for comment.

In his nine seasons, Baker's record was 139-122 with a Catholic League regular-season title in 1989. This past season, the Cardinals were 19-12 and finished ranked No. 14 by The Baltimore Sun.

Calvert Hall finished the Catholic League regular season in a third-place tie at 8-6 and reached the tournament semifinals. The Cardinals also tied for second in the Maryland Scholastic Association Armstrong Conference A League with a 12-4 mark.
