Woman surrenders after barricading self, son in house

A woman armed with a handgun barricaded herself in her Severn home with her 5-year-old son for nearly four hours Tuesday night before surrendering, county police said yesterday.

Officers arrived at the house in the 1300 block of Berni Ruth Lane about 8:50 p.m. to find the woman, whom they would not identify, barricaded inside. When police telephoned her, she threatened to harm the boy and commit suicide.

Police called members of the Special Operations Section and the Hostage Negotiation Team to talk to the woman, who surrendered shortly after 12:30 a.m.

The woman was taken to North Arundel Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Relatives picked up her son, who was unharmed. Police said the woman was not charged and no charges are pending.
