State to probe fired USF&G workers Drug violations, theft are alleged BALTIMORE CITY

The names of an unspecified number of USF&G Corp. employees were turned over to the city state's attorney's office after they were fired for alleged narcotics violations or theft of company property.

Karrie Burch-DeLuca, a company spokeswoman, confirmed yesterday that workers were fired following an internal investigation.

She declined to say how many people were fired or to discuss the alleged drug activity. The thefts involved computer equipment and other items, she added.

Mrs. Burch-DeLuca declined to release the names because company policy prohibits public discussion of personnel issues. Releasing details about the internal investigation might jeopardize the effort to prosecute the former workers, she added.

Mrs. Burch-DeLuca said much of the internal investigation focused on the Mount Washington Center in the 5800 block of Smith Ave., but activities at the firm's downtown office tower also were scrutinized.

Jerry Landsman, a USF&G security auditor, said results of the investigation have been turned over the city state's attorney's office to determine "what cases are appropriate for prosecution."

All employees were notified of the investigation in a notice

posted last Friday.

An excerpt from the letter read:

"USF&G is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy and productive workplace . . . [and] will not permit its employees to possess, consume, or distribute drugs or alcohol within its facilities or report to work or perform their duties after ingesting drugs of abuse or alcohol."

Mr. Landsman said it is not the first time USF&G employees have been fired for violating company rules on drug and alcohol use and for the theft of company property.

"It is not the first time we have done this. We have done this in the past and will continue to do it whenever we find it is a problem," he said.
