Anarino leads Pistons to Lake Shore crown

The Pistons won the Lake Shore Youth Basketball League 11-12 boys championship last week by defeating the Hornets in the final, 43-32.

Joey Anarino helped the Pistons advance to the championship game by scoring 33 points in their 52-24 semifinal victory over the Pacers. Robert Jones was the second-leading scorer for the victors with eight points, followed by C. J. Robey and Matt Friedman with six each.

Anarino scored a game-high 29 points in the championship and Robey added eight. Friedman forced three turnovers in the victory.

Craig Zuwallach led the Hornets with 16 points, and Eric Hartlove and Chris Baugham had six each.

* 8-10 boys -- The Severna Park Green Hornets B team won the Arbutus Tournament last Tuesday after beating the Glen Burnie Rebels, 35-18.

Lionel Jennings led the Hornets with nine points, followed by Bobby West and Dennis Williams with six each. Deon Gough had five points and Gavin Floyd four.

On Wednesday, the Green Hornets A and B team joined forces and advanced to the third round of the Crofton Tournament with a 47-15 win over Catonsville.

Jarrod Ross scored a game-high 12 points for the Hornets and Richard Tuohey added 11. Gil Goodrich was scored nine points and Joe Burke had seven.

The Hornets A team won the Arbutus Tournament on Thursday, defeating the Columbia Jaguars, 39-22.

Ross again led the Hornets with nine points, and Tuohey and Derek Dixon added nine each. Burke, Goodrich and David Wagner each contributed four. Natalie Hicks -- the first girl in more than 20 years to play on a boys county team -- scored two points and had a team-high six rebounds for the Hornets.

* 11-12 boys -- The Severn Athletic Club went 4-1 in the recent Arbutus Invitational B Division Tournament.

In its first game, SAC downed Arbutus, 34-20, behind 11 points from Charles Beverly.

Severn lost its second game, 32-28, to Greater Glen Burnie. Derrick Flournoy led the winners with nine points -- all on three-point shots. Other GGB scorers included Timmy Smith and Greg Cooper with six each, Jeff Carter (four) and Lance Guillermo, Grant Hess and Brent Webb with two apiece.

Beverly, Darriel Harris (two three-point shots) and Schirra Gray all had six points for Severn. Tom Kelly added four points and Steve Spurlin had three.

Severn bounced back several days later to defeat Edgemere, 37-24. Tito Jackson posted a team-high nine points for SAC and Greg Anderson scored six. Aaron Scott and Beverly had five each.

Jeremy Jennings led Edgemere with nine points, followed by Jeff Anderson (six) and Charles Yates (four).

Balanced scoring again led Severn to victory, this time over Columbia, 47-23.

Beverly had a team-high eight points and Spurlin, Jackson, Harris and Kelly chipped in seven each.

Severn improved to 4-1 with a 41-29 victory over Catonsville. Beverly again led his team with 11. Jackson added nine and Spurlin eight to go along with three blocked shots.

John Codwell scored eight in a losing effort.

* The Linthicum Ferndale Yellow Jackets recently won the Ricky Pierce League championship and the Arbutus 11-12 B Division Tournament championship.

The Jackets beat Crofton, 36-29, at Northeast High School to take the Pierce League crown, as Adam Sutton scored a team-high 12 points.

Joe Anarino and David Dolch scored eight and seven points, respectively. Other scorers included Chad Brown (five), Ryan George (two) and Nick Klug and Erik Larson with one each.

Linthicum Ferndale defeated the Greater Glen Burnie Patriots, 51-41, to win the Arbutus Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets went 17-for-21 from the foul line.

Dolch, who was 8-for-9 from the line, scored a game-high 22 points and Adam Sutton added nine.

The Patriots, who fought their way through the losers bracket in order to reach the championship, lost earlier to the Jackets, 43-30. Dolch and Sutton had 10 points each to lead the winners.

The Pats were paced by Timmy Smith's 15 points.

Linthicum Ferndale downed Catonsville, Howard County and Edgemere by scores of 32-16, 42-26, and 40-27, respectively, in early-round action.

Erik Larson's seven points led all scorers in the Catonsville game, followed by Dolch's six.

Dolch led all scorers with 10 points in the Howard County victory, followed by William Klemkowski with six points. Adam Sutton and Larson had five each, Anarino had four, and Mark Sutton and George had three apiece.

In the opener against Edgemere, Larson scored 12 for the Jackets.

Junior gymnastics

The Docksiders Level 9 girls gymnastics team captured team titles in two divisions at last weekend's Maryland State team championships at Fairland Gymnastics in Laurel.

In the 9-11 age group, Elise Ray of Columbia was named state champion in the all-around, the vault, balance beam and floor exercise.
