Candidates to be nominated tonight

Any Sykesville resident interested in running for a town office must be nominated at the council meeting at 7 o'clock tonight in the Town House, 7547 Main St.

The council will receive nominations for three council seats and for mayor, the positions at stake in the May 4 election.

Prospective candidates must be registered to vote in Sykesville.

Among the announced candidates are council incumbents Eugene E. Johnson and Julie Kaus. Council President Kenneth W. Clark will vacate his seat to run for mayor.

Mayor Lloyd W. Helt is stepping down because he is moving to Westminster.

FIRE

* Sykesville: Engines from the Sykesville and Gamber stations and Liberty Road volunteers from Baltimore County were dispatched for a chimney fire in the 7000 block of Saddle Drive at 3:57 p.m. yesterday.

This was the 129th chimney fire for the companies from Carroll County since Dec. 1, and the first since March 30, according to records of the Emergency Services Office.

Units were out for 10 minutes dealing with the fire near Springfield Hospital Center.
