Summer theater troupe unveils '93 schedule Theatre on the Hill set for 13th year

April 12, 1993

The 13th annual season for Theatre on the Hill, Western Maryland College's resident professional summer theater program, will feature musicals and comedies and a children's matinee theater this year.

All shows will take place on the Mainstage in Alumni Hall.

A core group of eight adult actors will lead the company in "Big River," "Barefoot in the Park" and "Leader of the Pack."

The traditional postshow revue and Saturday afternoon performances of "The Emperor's New Clothes," the latter discount-priced and designed for children, also are planned.

"Leader of the Pack," to be performed June 25-26, July 1-3 and July 8-10, features the doo-wop and campy rock 'n' roll music of songwriter Ellie Greenwich. The story traces her roots from Levittown, N.Y., to the top of the charts with such hits as "Chapel of Love," "Be My Baby," "Do Wah Diddy," and the title song. Tickets are $14 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and students.

The Neil Simon comedy "Barefoot in the Park" will be performed July 16-18, July 22-24, Aug. 1, 4-5, 8 and 11-12. The first in a string of successes for its author, "Barefoot" looks into the private life of a pair of newlyweds who are bombarded with distractions in their tiny New York apartment. Tickets are $11 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and students.

"Big River," the Tony Award-winning musical that helped rekindle interest in the Broadway theater a few years ago, will be performed July 30-31, Aug. 6-7 and Aug. 13-14. Featuring a score by country music great Roger Miller, this musical retells the story of Huck Finn and his friend Jim as they navigate the Mississippi in search of freedom and adventure. Tickets are $14 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and students.

A specially priced children's matinee theater will feature "The Emperor's New Clothes" July 10, 17, 24, and 31, and Aug. 7 and 14. Tickets are $4 for general admission.

Theatre on the Hill's traditional postshow revue, where actors and audience members ham it up, will take place on the Alumni Hall Understage after the company's performances July 10, 17, 24, 31, and Aug. 7 and 14. Tickets for the revue, which usually begins 20 minutes after the final curtain call on the Mainstage, are $3 each.

Sign-interpreted performances of the main productions will take place June 26, July 17 and Aug. 6.

All performances begin at 8 p.m. The children's matinee theater will start at 2 p.m. and run about 90 minutes.

Subscriptions for all Mainstage offerings, including the children's matinee, are $30.
