Harford County swimmers representing Maryland in last weekend's Eastern Zone All-Star Swimming Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., earned some excellent times, bringing home two gold medals and several top-three finishes.

Overall, the team finished runner-up to Mid-Atlantic, composed mostly of New York City teams. Twelve regional zone teams, including Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey, New England and Virginia, competed in the championships.

In the 13-14 bracket, Katy Novotny won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.48 seconds and placed second in the 100 freestyle (53.06), both Junior National qualifying times.

Novotny also finished second in the 100 backstroke (59.08). She was seventh in the 200 backstroke and combined with other Maryland team members for a second-place finish in the 400 mixed individual medley relay (4:02.55).

Jodi Encapera, who in earlier zone qualifiers earned Junior National times in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, showed her versatility with a gold-medal win in the 100 butterfly in 59.18.

She earned second in the 200 butterfly (2:10.47) and 500 freestyle (5:06.27). She was fourth in the 100 freestyle (53.30) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (25.11).

Amber Hayes, who combined with Novotny and Encapera in the 400 mixed individual medley relay, also finished fifth in the 100 backstroke.

In 11-12 competition, Omar Frasier brought home gold in the 100 backstroke in 57.90, a time good enough to report for consideration as a top 16 national time this year. He was third in the 50 backstroke (27.57) and also competed in the 50 freestyle.

Natika Dannenfelser finished fifth in the 50 breaststroke (32.71) and seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:24.89. She also competed in the 100 breaststroke, 100 and 200 freestyle.

Jeff Warwick, Chris Holloway and Justin Werner each competed in the 15-18 age group.

Erin Greason, a 9-10 competitor, finished third in the 50 breaststroke.
