Westminster's Gary Stuhler won the Winchester Speedway's season opener for late-model 25-lap feature race.

In his familiar red No. 44, Stuhler took the lead in the second lap and was the hare for the rest of the race.

Hampstead's Charlie Schaffer finished third after emerging from the pack on the 10th lap.

Both men had solid races despite two caution flags.

Last Sunday, it was Stuhler again -- this time at the Hagerstown Speedway with a heat win and an eighth-place finish in the 35-lap late-model feature.

Like Winchester, Schaffer wasn't far behind with a 15th-place finish.

In sprint-car action at Hagerstown, Jeff Shepard of Finksburg held the lead for one lap and then second for 18 laps until he began having steering problems. Shepard finished seventh.

Cris Eash, formerly of Woodbine, was 11th and Manchester's Jesse Wentz was 19th.

With no drag racing at area tracks, local racers have had to travel to race.

At Capitol Raceway in Crofton, George Hoff of Westminster was runner-up in Class II competition on March 21.

Taneytown's Corey Hess was runner-up in the Class II on April 4, and Rick Waxter of Westminster went five rounds in Class II at Capitol.

.` Lee Howe, McCarthey Davis, Hol

brook Davis and Todd Harris from Westminster competed in the Super Comp Class at Rockingham, N.C., on April 3.
