Around the house

* Scrub foyer floor with hot water and ammonia. Apply two thin coats of wax. Areas that receive less traffic should be waxed lightly or not at all to avoid wax buildup.

* Avoid baking a lopsided cake. Pour batter evenly into pan. With a spatula, pull the batter up the sides of the pan about 1/2 -inch all the way around. The batter will rise to those points, creating an even cake.

* Use a hot-glue gun to hang pictures, sconces and other objects. When ready to remove, use a blow dryer to soften glue. This will prevent hammering holes in the wall.

* When hand laundering, remove excess suds with a splash of vinegar to the rinse water. Rinse the garments again in clean water.

* To clean silk flowers, place in a clean pillowcase knotted at the end. Toss in dryer with a damp washcloth and tumble on air-dry for 20 minutes.

In the garden

* Remove rust from garden tools. Rub metal with a soap-filled steel wool pad dipped in turpentine; then rub with a wad of aluminum foil and buff with soft cloth.
