Nicklaus leads senior parade on Memory Lane

April 09, 1993|By Don Markus | Don Markus,Staff Writer

If it hadn't been for Nicklaus, Lehman might have been the story yesterday. This is his first Masters. His 10-year career was interrupted for six years when he lost his PGA Tour card and couldn't get it back. And there he was, sitting next to Nicklaus, soaking in the atmosphere, if not not the attention.

"It's a thrill," he said to a near-empty press room.

Will what Floyd called "a nostalgia show" continue today and into the weekend? A lot depends on the weather. After a day of sunny skies and no wind, it's supposed to get wet and nasty today. The forecast is for thunderstorms, hail and high winds.

"They used to say that when Arnold or Hogan or myself walked onto the first tee, the sun came out," said Nicklaus. "Maybe it will happen tomorrow."

Inside the time capsule here at Augusta National, anything is possible.
