The varsity head coach of Anne Arundel County's Northeast High School girls softball team was arrested yesterday and charged with multiple sex offenses, county police said.

Ronald Walter Price, 49, of the 200 block of W. Edgevale Drive in Brooklyn Park, who teaches social studies at Northeast, was charged with a fourth-degree sex offense, child abuse and performing unnatural or perverted sex acts.

He was held at the Northern District police station and was to be taken before a District Court commissioner in Glen Burnie for a bail hearing early today.

Details of the investigation, which the police said began on Wednesday and included allegations of sex acts with one or more students, were not immediately available.

Top police and school system officials could not be reached for comment on the case.

Roger Stitt, the school's athletic director, decline to comment.

Police said Mr. Price was arrested around 8 p.m. yesterday, reportedly at his home.

Reached at her home by telephone, Mr. Price's wife said, "No comment."

Police said in a brief press release that Mr. Price has been employed by the Anne Arundel County school system for about 25 years.

They said the investigation is continuing and that more charges were possible.
