Westminster boys, girls top Liberty Tennis

Westminster came away with a sweep of visiting Liberty in tennis yesterday, as the Owls' boys and girls each captured 4-1 wins.

Seniors Marco Fuggitti and Mandy Koenig ran their records to 3-0 at No. 1 singles. The Westminster boys improved to 2-0 overall, the girls 2-1. Liberty's boys are 0-2, the girls 1-1.

The Owls won all four of the singles matches. Liberty's Steve Speck gave Fuggitti a rough time before falling, 10-8, and Koenig continued to impress with a convincing 10-1 win over Dawn Wilhelm.

At No. 2 singles, Westminster's Matt Fisher defeated Mike Knoerlein, 10-4, and Andrea Stanton ousted Dawn Schaeffer, 10-6.

"Any time you can get a county win, you take it," said Westminster boys coach Fran McCullin.

"There's no rest. We go to North Carroll tomorrow, while Liberty's at South Carroll. There are a lot of big county matches here."

Liberty's Chris North and Mike Syzmanski came away with the only Lions boys win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Steve Hockstra and Eric Minor, 10-4.

Westminster's Jeff Seaman and Brian Haines teamed to win at No. 2 doubles. The Robbie Krebs/Mark Pallack duo won at No. 3 boys for Westminster.

Westminster won the first two girls doubles matches with Laura Shoofner and Kristy Mathai at No. 1 and Sara Clark and Kristen Hoffmeyer at No. 2.

Christine Ryan and Jen Minchik teamed to give the Liberty girls their only win at No. 3.
