Town seeks ban on illegal dumping

The Mount Airy Town Council has proposed a $100 fine for people who illegally dump at the town's recycling bins and composting facility behind Prospect Park.

"The biggest problem is at our compost site," said Councilman Billy Wagner. "People are dumping garbage. Someone dropped a load of carpet remnants. People are looking for a place to dump so they don't have to go to the landfill."

The council introduced the proposed ordinance Monday. Final action on the ordinance is expected at the council's May meeting.

Residents are allowed to dump yard clippings at the compost center without charge. The town grinds the clippings into mulch, which is used at town parks and is available to residents.
