Drug testing for school bus drivers and a report by the "Ugly Alternatives" Committee on the use of school facilities are among the topics the county school board will take up tomorrow.

The drug testing program for school bus drivers is mandated by state law, but each county must develop its own testing plan by July 1.

Under the proposal being submitted to the school board, a bus driver applicant could be refused certification after testing positive for chemical substances or failing to submit to the test. In addition, applicants will be required to disclose drug-related convictions, or history of drug or alcohol abuse.

Once certified, bus drivers must agree to submit to periodic testing for up to 60 months from the date of certification. A bus driver could lose certification for refusing to submit to the test or if the test result shows evidence of chemical substances.

The other major item on the agenda is a report from the Superintendent's Task Force on Facility Needs, which has been nicknamed the "Ugly Alternatives" Committee. The task force has been examining how to relieve crowding in many county schools without constructing new ones.

In addition, the school board will review a proposal to send South River Senior High School's dance company on a trip this summer to Australia. The students have been raising money to cover the estimated cost of $1,500 per person.

The meeting, at the county Board of Education offices on Riva Road, is to begin at 9 a.m.
