"Exploding Boat," a photograph by Shawn Colleran, has won first place in the experimental category of the Carroll County School Media Festival.

Shawn, 14, a freshman at Westminster High School, captured "Exploding Boat" on color film during a boat show demonstration at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., last year. He is the son of Joanne and John Sayre of Pheasant Run Drive in Finksburg.

Two of his photographs, and 22 other photos by 19 Carroll students in kindergarten through 12th grade, now are in the running for the Maryland School Media Festival, which will be held May 26 and 27 at Towson State University.

BTC The students won in the county competition last month. The second half, the video competition, is scheduled tomorrow at the Carroll County Schools Resource Center at Westminster High School.

Photography contest categories included life study, landscape, still life and experimental. Students from kindergarten through grade 3 were grouped together for competition, as were grade 4-6, grades 7 and 8 and grades 9 through 12.

During the past year, Shawn has participated in several competitions and netted awards recognizing his ability. "Winning these awards has made me really confident about what I can do," he said. "I am surprised with the results, since I have only been taking pictures for the last two to three years."

His first award came in August during the Carroll County 4-H Fair, when Shawn entered photographs from family vacations in Tennessee and Florida.

"I won first place in the junior division [ages 8 to 14] for a photo I took in the Smoky Mountains last spring that I called 'Trees in the Mist,' " he said. "Exploding Boat" got an honorable mention.

"Exploding Boat" also won the experimental category at the Maryland State Fair 4-H competition last year. The photo has been placed on permanent display in the library at the Ag Center in Westminster.
