3 teens charged in attempted holdup

Three Baltimore County teen-agers were arrested Thursday and charged with attempting to rob a cab driver in Oakland Mills, Howard County police said.

Taki Troy Hughes, 17, of the 7800 block of Jody Knoll Road; Michael Craig Franklin, 18, of the 3200 block of Northmont Road; and Daryl Anthony West, 17, of the 3200 block of Richwood Avenue, were charged as adults with attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, weapons charges and conspiracy to commit robbery, police said.

The robbery occurred about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, when a Columbia Cab Co. driver picked up a fare in the 6400 block of Houndhill Court, police said.

The man asked to be driven to the Columbia Mall, but en route he produced a sawed-off shotgun and demanded money. The driver lost control of the cab and drove it into a yard on Houndhill Court, police said.

The gunman jumped from the cab and got into a Volvo, which sped away, police said.

Witnesses gave police the Volvo's license number, and they traced the car to a house on Richwood Avenue in Baltimore County, police said. Baltimore County police were notified. When they arrived at the address, police said, Daryl West was driving the Volvo up to the house.
