Around the house

* Eliminate odors from laundry hamper. Sprinkle baking soda between each layer of soiled clothing, such as sports uniforms. A 1/2 cup of baking soda added to rinse cycles when laundering will also help remove odors from clothing.

* Check battery-operated smoke detectors at least once a month. Depress test button, if provided, or blow smoke from a candle into the unit. Replace batteries at least once a year or whenever you hear the warning signals (usually short beeps) indicating batteries are weak.

* Remove dust from curtains, table skirts and coverlets quickly. Place in dryer and set dial to a no-heat or air-dry setting. A fabric softener sheet will add a fresh scent. Or hang outside on a clear, breezy day to freshen.

* Sweep up pet hair with a broom that has been dampened with water. Hair will cling to moisture.

* Maximize lighting in a room by placing lamps in corners, where the light will reflect off two walls.

* Keep ants away with a mixture of borax and flour. Mix 1 cup flour and 2 cups borax in a jar. Punch holes in the jar's lid and sprinkle outdoors around the foundation of your house.

In the garden

* Prepare lawn. Rake leaves and check for weeds. Treat bare patches with ground limestone, weed controls and fertilizers. Sow new seed.
