The local flavor of the Baltimore Bays is becoming more pronounced.

Coach Kevin Healey yesterday announced the signing of nine more players, all with Maryland ties. The Bays have 18 players under contract, with 15 others competing for the remaining eight spots on the team.

The Bays, playing in the new, nine-team Atlantic Division of the U.S. Interregional Soccer League, will open its 16-game season on the road April 23 against the Delaware Wizards. Their first home game is May 1 at UMBC Stadium against the Raleigh (N.C.) Flyers.

The new Bays signees include Joe Layfield of Calvert Hall and Towson State, John Stroud of Bethesda and James Madison, Rob Elliott of Calvert Hall and UMBC, Steve Ware of Towson Catholic and Towson State, Steve Quaranta of Archbishop Curley and Essex Community College, Keith Merryman of Archbishop Curley and Essex, Vince Moskunas of Calvert Hall and Loyola College, Terry Locklear of Patapsco High and UMBC, and the only goalie in the group, Shawn Bochmeke, who came from New Jersey to play at Loyola College.
