Ceremonies to hail light rail extension NORTH COUNTY -- Linthicum * Ferndale * Brooklyn Park * Pumphrey

Community ceremonies will mark a three-mile Central Light Rail Line extension into Anne Arundel County on Saturday.

A ribbon cutting, featuring speeches from North Linthicum Community Association members, band music and refreshments, is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the North Linthicum light rail stop at Camp Meade Road between the Beltway and Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard. Parking for 162 cars is available.

Area residents will cut a second ribbon at noon at the Nursery Road stop at Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard and Nursery Road. That site has 37 parking spaces.

Gov. William Donald Schaefer and state transportation officials will cut a third ribbon at 1 p.m. at the Baltimore Highlands stop, at Baltimore Street and Georgia Avenue, in Baltimore County.

Light rail service opens on the southern spur tomorrow for the 3:05 p.m. Orioles exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Camden Yards, then Monday for regular commuter runs. Trains will run every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays, with supplemental service for ball games.

The opening of the four newest rail stations, including one in Linthicum behind the Royal Farm store, marks the third phase in the completion of the Timonium-to-Glen Burnie light rail line. Ferndale and Glen Burnie stops will open in July.

Area schools continue kindergarten sign-up

The following area elementary schools are continuing kindergarten and prekindergarten registration today and tomorrow.

* Brooklyn Park Elementary School, 200 14th Ave., from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Information: 222-6590.

* Park Elementary School, 201 11th Ave., will be registering pupils for the prekindergarten program. Enrollment is limited to the first 40 children from the attendance area. Information: 222-6593.

* Belle Grove Elementary School, 4502 Belle Grove Road, will be registering students during regular school hours. Information: 222-6589

Parents or guardians should bring their child's birth certificate, immunization records and proof of residence.
