Richard Diebenkorn, 70, whose West Coast-flavored abstract expressionist painting made him one of the nation's most highly regarded artists, died of respiratory failure Tuesday at Alta Bates Herrick Medical Center in Berkeley, Calif., after several years of failing health. The unassuming artist is best known for his "Ocean Park" series, shimmering studies of light and landscape named for a section of Santa Monica where he lived for more than 20 years.
