Navy beats Colgate, 6-3, in Patriot baseball opener Duke grand slam sinks Terps, 11-4

Marcus Lee and Andy Payne drove in two runs apiece and freshman Toby Moore struck out 11 as Navy (4-3, 1-0) defeated Colgate (0-4, 0-1), 6-3, in its first Patriot League baseball game yesterday. Host Navy scored two runs in the first inning as Lee doubled in Steve Mauro and Payne singled in Lee. Colgate scored two runs in the second off of Moore, but the Midshipmen answered with three runs in the third.

The second game was called off because of rain in the bottom of the third with Navy leading, 4-0.

* Duke 11, Maryland 4: Casey Jower's grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie and lifted Duke (22-6-1, 4-3) over Maryland (4-10, 2-5) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Durham, N.C.

Maryland starter Steve Paasch (1-3) got the loss, and Craig Starman (4-3) earned the win for Duke.

* Radford 5-4, Towson State 2-6: First baseman Glenn Davis hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning as host Towson State (3-10, 3-5) split a Big South Conference doubleheader by beating Radford (9-6, 1-3), 6-4, in the second game.

Davis hit his first home run of the season with one out in th seventh. His homer to right field drove in senior Jay Logwood (Randallstown). Joe Hughes (Calvert Hall) got the win for Towson in the second game.

In the opener, Jim Abbott pitched a five-hitter for the Highlanders.

* William Patterson 17, Salisbury State 3: Mario Perez drove in five runs and Dan Bartolomeo had three RBI as visiting William Patterson scored all its runs in the middle three innings in a win over Salisbury State (4-4).

Sandor Christian went the distance for William Patterson, allowing three hits and striking out seven. The game was called after six innings because of rain. Jerry Nichols drove in all three Salisbury runs with a pair of home runs.

* Delaware State 4-7, Coppin State 5-4: Despite managing one hit in the opener of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader, Coppin State (2-8, 3-3) rallied with four unearned runs in the seventh inning, including a bases-loaded walk to Rene Taylor for the victory.

David Dill's home run in the eighth inning powered Delaware State (6-10, 5-4) to the victory in the second game.


PRINCETON, N.J. -- Navy's heavyweight crews scored a clean sweep over the Princeton heavyweights here on Lake Carnegie with the Midshipmen varsity eight leading the way with a 4.92-second victory. The Midshipmen also captured the second varsity freshmen eight and varsity four with coxswain races to win the Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup.

Navy's varsity eight beat Columbia by six seconds in a lightweight crew regatta on the Severn River.

Track and field

DOVER, Del. -- Coppin State won five relay events and Bobby Baker took first place in the triple jump (47 feet, 8 inches) at the Delaware State College Relays at Alumni Field.

The Eagles took first in the men's and women's 3,200 meters, men's and women's 1,600 meters and the men's distance relay.

Morgan State took first place in the 800-meter relay and Kimberli Dickerson took first in the women's high jump (5-2).

First-place finishers for UMES included Antoine Peck (high jump), Lisa Casimir (javelin), Michelle Nurse (400 hurdles) and Donette Douglas (100 --).
