Baptist church hopes to receive approval for sign

A southern Anne Arundel County minister says he's hopeful the county Board of Appeals will allow his church to put up a sign larger than regulations permit after a hearing last week.

The Rev. Briton Fletcher, pastor of Friendship Community Baptist Church at Route 2 and Jewell Road, argued last week that the church needs the sign so motorists on Route 2 can easily identify.

The church has operated a community food and clothing bank on the site for five years. But the building sits 160 feet off the road and may be difficult to spot, he said.

An administrative hearing officer turned down the church's request in December, saying there was no legal basis to support it.

The appeals board decided to visit the church this weekend before making a decision. The board must issue its findings within 60 days.

"We thought it went very well, and we're hopeful a resolution can be reached," said a church spokeswoman.
