Leading gymnastics tourney routine for Ruth, Willet

Perna Gymnastics Club's Sean Ruth and Nick Willet ranke among the leaders in almost every event in this weekend's USA Gymnastics-sponsored boys state championships at the Fairland Athletic Club in Prince George's County to qualify for April's regionals at West Point.

Competing at Level 6, Ruth (7-8 age bracket) scored 5.20 on floor exercises (fourth place), 5.40 on pommel horse (eighth), 4.50 on rings, 5.10 on vault (third), 5.30 on parallel bars (fifth), 5.10 on horizontal bars (sixth) and 30.60 all-around (fourth).

At Level 5, Willet (12-14 bracket) scored 5.50 on floor (second), 3.40 on pommel horse (sixth), 5.40 on rings (sixth), 5.90 on vault (first), 5.50 on parallel bars (first), 6.20 on horizontal bars (first) and 31.90 all-around (second).

Other Perna competitors at Level 6 were Jonathan Roscoe and John Royer.

Roscoe (7-8 bracket) scored 3.40 on floor, 4.40 on pommel horse, 5.10 on rings (13th), 4.20 on vault, 5.00 on parallel bars, 4.90 on horizontal bars and 27.00 all-around.

Royer (9-11 bracket) was 5.20 on floor, 4.20 on pommel horse, 4.90 on rings, 4.90 on vault (14th), 5.30 on parallel bars (16th), 4.10 on horizontal bars and 28.60 all-around.

At Level 4, Ed Calwell (15-18 bracket) scored 4.90 on floor, 3.90 on pommel horse, 6.40 on rings, 5.30 on vault, 5.00 on parallel bars, 4.70 on horizontal bars and 30.20 all-around.

Chris Forman (9-11 bracket) was 6.90 on floor, 3.70 on pommel horse, 6.90 on rings, 7.10 on vault (second), 4.90 on parallel bars, 6.70 on horizontal bars and 36.20 all-around.

Forman's performance landed him a slot on a special team, selected by state gymnastics officials for advanced gymnastics instruction.

Girls gymnastics

Perna Gymnastics Club's Jessica Groszkowski, competing at Level 8, qualified at the Frederick Classic for the sectional championships based on individual performances and her all-around score.

She scored an 8.50 on vault (second), 7.70 on uneven bars (third), 8.15 on balance beam (third), 8.80 on floor (third), and 33.15 all around (third).

* Seven Perna girls won award ribbons for their all-around scores in Sunday's Level 5 sectional qualifier at the Perna Club.

Courtney Prentice scored 8.15 on vault, 8.75 on bars, 8.40 on beam, 7.90 on floor and 33.20 all-around (red ribbon).

Rachel Barr was 8.35 on vault, 9.10 on bars, 7.65 on beam, 7.80 on floor and 32.90 all-around (white ribbon).

Aimee Willet scored 8.00 on vault, 8.35 on bars, 8.50 on beam, 8.50 on floor and 33.35 all-around (red ribbon).

Erin Graf had 7.80 on vault, 8.60 on bars, 8.25 on beam, 8.20 on floor and 32.90 all-around (white ribbon).

Amanda Ebaugh scored 8.25 on vault, 8.35 on bars, 7.75 on beam, 7.80 on floor and 32.15 all-around (white ribbon).

Lauren Prentice scored 7.70 on vault, 9.25 on bars, 8.85 on beam, 8.30 on floor and 34.10 all-around (red ribbon).

Jennifer Forman was 6.55 on vault, 8.45 on bars, 6.10 on beam, 6.95 on floor and 28.05 all-around (green ribbon).

* Two Carroll Challengers' gymnasts also were awarded ribbons at that Perna meet.

Angie Dagami scored 7.60 on vault, 8.80 on bars, 7.65 on beam, 6.75 on floor and 30.80 all-around (yellow ribbon).

Jessica Federici scored 6.20 on vault, 6.15 on bars, 7.35 on beam, 7.20 on floor and 26.90 all-around (green ribbon).

Women's basketball

House of Pasta (6-0) stayed in first place with a 61-36 win over Active Glass.

Teri Leatherwood and Beth Brown paced the winners with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Stacy Dinsmore had 12 points for Active Glass and Kathy McNeave, 10.

* Spangler Construction beat Nick's Pizzaria, 72-27. Alice Smith threw in 18 points for Spangler and Laura Winter, 16. Sherri Olson's 10 points led Nick's.

Sandymount basketball

* Grades 3-5 Division -- Justin Dunn scored 17 points to lead the Lakers' 27-17 win over the Celtics. Brock Meyers scored eight for the Celts.

* In a battle for the B Conference top slot, the Magic moved past the Jazz, 25-19. J. W. Sawyre's 14 points paced the winners and Steve Lawson had nine for the Jazz.

* The Pistons cruised to a 37-9 win over the Heat. Jesse Peltzer and Russ Davenport each had 10 points for the winners and Matt Walsh, four for the Heat.

* Colin Boeh scored 13 points to lead the Bulls to a 26-24 win over the Hornets. Dan Levin's 12 points paced the Hornets.

* Grades 6-8 Division -- The first-place Bullets beat the Lakers, 59-32. Todd Cheney threw in 22 points for the winners, while Scott Stem had 12 for the Lakers.

* Eric Talvik scored 17 points to pace the Hornets to a 61-43 win over the Celtics. The Celtics' Nick Jenkins led all scorers with 22.

* The Bulls ripped the Magic, 39-20. The Bulls' Kelby Smith and Pat Hines of the Magic each scored 12 points.

St. Joseph's basketball

* Prep Division -- Black came out of the losers' bracket to win the postseason title from regular-season champ Gold.

Black evened things up in the double-elimination affair when it went on a 16-4 third-quarter run to overcome Gold, 30-21.

Ed Ruch and Tim Shifflet paced Black with 15 and 11 points, respectively, while Mike Nagel had seven for Gold and Alex Hafer added six.

In the finals, Gold led by three points with 1:30 remaining but Black rallied to win, 30-27.

Ruch's 13 points led Black. Nagel and Hafer each had eight for Gold and Brock Schaffer added seven.
