Orioles -- Optioned OF Damon Buford to Triple-A Rochester.

Boston Red Sox -- Placed C John Marzano on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Chicago White Sox -- Exercised their option on OF Bo Jackson for the 1993 season.

New York Yankees -- Optioned SS Dave Silvestri to Triple-A Columbus. Placed P Jack Lazorko on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Placed P Ken Howell on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Basketball

NBA -- Suspended the New York Knicks' Greg Anthony without pay for at least five games and fined him $20,500; Knicks' Doc Rivers two games without pay and fined him $10,000; and Phoenix Suns' Kevin Johnson two games without pay and fined him $15,000 for their part in a brawl in a game Tuesday night. Fined Suns' Jerrod Mustaf (Maryland) $10,500; Suns' Danny Ainge; Knicks' John Starks; and Knicks' Anthony Mason $7,500 for their part in the brawl. Fined the Knicks' Charles Smith, Rolando Blackman, Charles Oakley, Eric Anderson, Herb Williams, Hubert Davis and Bo Kimble and Suns' Cedric Ceballos, Tom Chambers, Frank Johnson, Tim Kempton, Negele Knight, Mark West and Richard Dumas $500 apiece for leaving the bench area during the incident. Fined the Knicks $50,000 and the Suns $25,000 for failing to control their players during the brawl.

Chicago Bulls -- Activated C Bill Cartwright from the injured list. Placed G Corey Williams on the injured list.

Minnesota Timberwolves -- Signed coach Sidney Lowe to a three-year contract.

Colleges

NCAA -- Division I Women's Volleyball Committee voted to recommend to the Executive Committee that the Big South Conference (Towson State, UMBC) be granted automatic qualification for the 1993 tournament if the championship bracket is expanded to 48 teams next year.

Central -- Announced that football coach Ron Schipper will resign as AD at the end of the school year.

Connecticut -- Named Jay Paterno wide receiver and tight end coach.

Georgia Tech -- Announced the resignation of men's basketball coach Bobby Cremins to take the same position at South Carolina.

Maryland -- Announced that swimmer Sarah Borst of West Chester (Pa.) High has orally committed to attend.

Phillips -- Announced the resignation of men's basketball coach Denny Price to devote more time to his duties as AD.

South Plains, Texas -- Announced the resignation of men's basketball coach Ron Mayberry.

Football

Los Angeles Raiders -- Signed QB Jeff Hostetler to a three-year contract.

Minnesota Vikings -- Signed QB Jim McMahon to a two-year contract.

Hockey

New York Rangers -- Called up D Joby Messier from AHL Binghamton.

St. Louis Blues -- Recalled D Bret Hedican from IHL Peoria.

USA Hockey -- Named Tim Taylor coach; John Cunniff special assignment scout; and Brian Burke general manager of the National team. Named Mike Sertich coach and Steve Cedorchuk assistant coach of the Select team.

Tennis

ATP -- Announced that Todd Witsken is leaving the pro tour after this year's U.S. Open to become director of the Indianapolis Sports Center.
