Professor to promote Greek classics

Old books have something to offer today's students, says a University of Pennsylvania scholar who will speak about the value of studying Greek classics in a free public lecture at Anne Arundel Community College April 8.

Sheila Murnaghan, associate professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania and formerly of Yale University, will address "Revisiting the Greek Classics: New Reasons for Reading Old Books."

The college Honors program is sponsoring the lecture at 12:30 p.m. in Room 112 of the college's Humanities lecture hall.

Dr. Murnaghan, a graduate of Harvard University and Newnham College, Cambridge, England, earned her doctor of philosophy degree at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

At Yale University for 11 years, Dr. Murnaghan is the founding editor of the Yale Journal of Criticism and a member of the editorial boards of the American Journal of Philology and Helios.
