High school baseball previews

March 23, 1993

Mount Carmel and Friends School were omitted mistakenly from yesterday's baseball preview. Here are capsules of each team:

Mount Carmel Cougars

1992 record: 13-1. Coach: Mike Naunton.

Top players: Ben Cummins, Sr., P/SS; Chris Quick, Sr., 1B; C. J. Crum, Sr., 3B; Jason McKinney, Jr., SS/P; Mark Guanti, Jr., OF; Paul Nesbit, Jr., OF; Chuck Friedel, Soph., C.

Outlook: Cummins, the second-leading hitter at .420, led the Cougars to the MSA C title with a 6-1 pitching record, and Friedel's .460 average led the team's hitting. "Our strength is going to be pitching, with all of our pitchers back," said first-year coach Naunton. "We'll also rely on defense and try not to make many mental errors. We like to get runners on base, and we have some speed with McKinney and Guanti. We're not a power team, so we'll look to put the ball in play."

Friends School Quakers

1992 record: 9-3. Coach: Tom Randall.

Top players: Bobby Yang, Sr., RF; Rich Santos, Jr., 1B; Carter Adkinson, Jr., P/3B; David Schummers, Soph., P/2B; Mike Delara, Jr., SS.

Outlook: The Quakers lost just two players from last year's squad, which was third in the C Conference. Several clutch batters return with Santos (.576), Delara (.500), Yang (.429), Schummers (.409) and Adkinson (.385). Schummers, a left-hander, had a grand slam last year and his squad should challenge for this year's Division II crown with Mount Carmel, Boys' Latin and St. Paul's. "We've been working real hard and the kids have jelled together more than in previous years," said Randall, whose Quakers open with Boys' Latin on April 2.
