Response team member to receive medal tonight

Neil Jones of Glen Burnie is one of four members of the state Department of the Environment's Emergency Response Team who will receive the Baltimore County Fire Department's top civilian commendation tonight.

The Citizen's Medal of Honor is being awarded to the men for their efforts in controlling a Feb. 17 ammonia leak at the G. Heileman Brewing Co.

The leak led to the evacuation of most of the plant off Hollins Ferry Road and prompted officials to close the Harbor Tunnel Thruway.

The men worked through the night to identify a faulty valve in the refrigeration system as the source of the ammonia.
