Genstar Booters take indoor title

The Genstar Booters under-12 boys soccer team won its first indoor championship with a 5-2 victory over Forest Hill at the Maryland Sports Arena.

Anthony Huczek scored two goals for the Booters, and Brent Haberkam, Dan Magee and Steve Markiewicz each added one.

Assists were provided by Haberkam (two) and Steve Markiewicz.

Jarod Denis' 27-save performance for the Booters helped the HTC team overcome a 2-2 tie at halftime.

Also contributing were Steve Adolph, Justin Collins, Alexander Ioannidis, Chris Johnson, Giovanni Julian, Adam Limback, Alex Markiewicz, Ryan Nayden and Christopher Swec.

The Booters (7-1) are coached by Howard Adolph, Benny Kurytka and Jason Huczek.

* In under-14 soccer action, the Edgewood Spirit jumped out to a 5-1 halftime lead against Abingdon and held on to win, 5-2, at the Maryland Sports Arena.

Spirit goals were scored by Robert Gaines, Chris Kroner, Trevor Mullins, Bruce Beegle and Alan Windsor.

Eric Dannenfelser had two assists, and Gaines and Kroner each added one.

Steve Bostic scored twice for Abingdon. John Grimes had one assist.

Swimming

Justin Troyer, 12, and Dan Machovec, 14, competing for the Harford Y Hurricanes, qualified for the Regionals of the YMCA Swimming Championships at Princeton Univer sity in New Jersey over the weekend.

Troyer won the silver medal in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.22 seconds at the district championships in Laurel.

He also finished fifth and qualified in the 50 breaststroke (37.18).

Machovec, a 13-14 competitor, finished eighth in the 100 butterfly in 1 minute, 7.28 seconds.

In the girls 9-10 competition, Christine Betzing qualified in the 50 freestyle, finishing second in 28.37, just off the winning mark of 28.29. Her mark was also a top 16 national time. She also qualified in the 50 butterfly (33.99).

Erin Greason placed sixth in the 100 individual medley and qualified for the regionals in 1:16.45. She also swam a qualifying and top 16 national time in the 50 breaststroke (36.72). Amber Moxey (37.34) and Sara Dellone (37.66) qualified in the 50 backstroke.

The 11-12 competitors were also successful. Cathy Gyolai won the 50 butterfly competition with a top 16 national time of 29.20. She finished second in the 50 freestyle in 26.48, also a top 16 national time. Meredith Garback also qualified in the 50 freestyle in 28.81 and the 100 freestyle in 1:03.33.

Heather Wilkerson qualified in the 50 backstroke (33.50), while Kelly Knight did so in the 50 breaststroke (37.42).

In 13-14 action, Kathy Rising finished first in the 100 breaststroke and qualified for nationals with a time of 1:09.96. She also swam a 26.73 to qualify with teammate Beth Goodwin (26.56) in the 50 freestyle.

In the 15-18 age bracket, Anna Demott (26.77) and Amy Landis (26.49) each qualified in the 50 freestyle.

Girls soccer

The Bel Air under-10 travel team defeated Carroll Manor, 4-0, in

Baltimore Metro League indoor soccer action. Angela Munro paced Bel Air with two goals, and Kristin Ivy and Monica Janowitz each scored once.

Katie Campbell recorded the shutout.

Girls basketball

The annual Bel Air Girls Basketball Tournament finished with the Terrapins beating the Ravens in 13-14 competition and the Sables edging the Monarchs in the 11-12 final.

In the double-elimination tournament, the 11-12 Monarchs came

up from the second bracket, forced a final game with the Sables, but fell short, 7-4.

The Monarchs beat the Sables, 8-6, the first time the teams met, but the Sables regrouped to win the second contest, 15-9, forcing the final game.

In the 13-14 final, Lynn Wilkinson hit a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to lift the undefeated Terrapins to a 29-26 win over the Ravens.

* In the annual Harford County Girls Basketball Tournament, Fallston's 11-12 and 13-14 teams are undefeated and wait in the winners' bracket to play championship games tomorrow night.

The 13-14 Fallston team defeated North Harford, 59-21, and Bel Air, 27-14, to advance to the finals.

Karen Tiedemann combined for 31 points, Jenny Cook 19 and Stephanie Colevas 18 to lead Fallston to the championship game.

The 11-12 Fallston team will play its championship game against the winner of Bel Air Jazz and Aberdeen tomorrow night.

In 9-10 competition, North Harford will play the winner of Fallston and Bel Air Tornados for the championship.
