* The Carroll County Commissioners announced the appointment of Walter V. Bennett, Sykesville, to the Carroll County Sanitary Commission. Mr. Bennett, a former county commissioner and retired postmaster of Sykesville, fills the vacancy caused by the death of the commission chairman, Robert E. Greenshields, last Monday.

* President Fred G. Holloway of Western Maryland College announced Monday that the institution has been selected to train Army air cadets under the new specialized training program, and said the first 200 cadets would arrive in June. He explained that each group of air cadets will train at Western Maryland for a period of five months. Although expected to comply with college regulations, they will be under strict military discipline.

* New Windsor -- Preston Roop has secured a new Ford Truck, with name of Roop Bros. on it, which will be the firm name in the near future when he takes his brother Howard as partner in the grocery business.

* March came in as quietly as a summer morning, but the sun shone upon as beautiful a winter scene as has ever been witnessed in this locality. The face of nature was encased in ice and every twig and shrub and all other stationary objects in the open air sparkled and scintillated in the rays of the orb of day. It was weird and witching and lasted most of the day and even into the light of the full moon.
