Ernest W. Gosnell Retired programmer

Ernest W. Gosnell, a native of Woodbine who retired about 10 years ago as a computer programmer at an Army Corps of Engineers facility near Berryville, Va., died Tuesday of a respiratory illness at a hospital in Richmond.

Mr. Gosnell, 79, moved from Berryville to Richmond, Va., about six years ago.

He had served in the Army in World War II and had been an A&P store manager in Mount Airy before being transferred to Berryville 46 years ago. He also owned his own independent grocery store for a time in Berryville before starting to work for the Army.

Graveside services were conducted Friday at St. John's Cemetery in Ellicott City.

He is survived by his wife, Portia C. Gosnell; a son, E. William Gosnell Jr. of Annapolis; a daughter, Patti Gosnell Woodle of Richmond; and four grandchildren.
