Jacks skip on a chance to close in on playoffs

Four more wins, Skipjacks coach Barry Trotz reasons, should clinch it.

The Skipjacks had a chance to lower the number to three last night, but bowed to the Rochester Americans, 8-6, before 5,219 at the Baltimore Arena.

The Skipjacks scored three unanswered goals, the last by Eric Murano, to tie it at 6 with 7:59 left. But Rochester's Doug Macdonald scored the game-winner with 6:38 remaining and Keith Carney added an insurance goal.

Macdonald scored the goal against his University of Wisconsin roommate of three years, Baltimore goalie Duane Derksen.

"He always used to go to my stick side in practice, and he did this time, too," Derksen said.

Derksen had 17 saves after replacing Byron Dafoe in the first period when Rochester led 5-1.

After practice one day this week, Trotz tried to figure what the Skipjacks would need in their remaining 13 games to clinch fourth place in the AHL's Southern Division and a spot in the playoffs. The Hershey Bears are fifth, four points behind Baltimore.

"Four more wins should clinch it," Trotz said. "If we get eight more points for a total of 66, that would force Hershey to go 7-6 the rest of the way. They haven't played over .500 for a while."
