A 68-year-old Gamber man was critically injured yesterday when his car was struck by a step-van that careened out of control across the median strip on Route 140 near Suffolk Road, state police said.

The driver of the car, Leroy Charles Bell, was taken to the Sinai Hospital trauma center. He remained in critical condition there last night with head injuries.

Troopers said Mr. Bell was driving north when the southbound step-van struck the front of his car at 10:52 a.m.

The car was jammed under the van, which stopped sideways across both northbound lanes.

Police charged the step-van driver, identified as Joseph Louis Duvall of Dundalk, with negligent driving, failure to drive to the right of center and a seat-belt violation. He was not injured.

The collision caused a backup on Route 140 as police detoured northbound traffic onto Old Westminster Pike.

About an hour earlier, a county road truck was struck within seconds by two cars while it was parked on Gist Road behind a disabled county truck and trailer.

Jennifer Allyson Reid, 17, of Westminster, struck the truck in a Dodge Colt. She was released from Carroll County General Hospital after she was treated for facial injuries.

State police said Ms. Reid was southbound on Gist Road in the fog and did not see the truck in time to stop. Her car hit the left rear dual wheels of the truck and spun 180 degrees, coming to rest in the northbound lane facing north.

The second car, also southbound, struck the truck in the rear and became wedged under it. The driver, James T. Strine, 50, of Union Bridge, was not injured.

No one was in the county vehicles when the accidents occurred.

At 1:13 p.m. yesterday, a 34-year-old Westminster was injured when her car was struck by a tractor-trailer rig at Route 31 and Uniontown Road.

Susan Marie Ripper was taken to Carroll County General Hospital when she complained of chest pains after the collision. She was held for observation, a spokeswoman said.

City police said Ms. Ripper was driving west on Uniontown Road, crossing Route 31, when the right rear of her vehicle was struck by the southbound tractor trailer operated by Abraham Brisbone, 68, of Baltimore.

The tractor jackknifed after the collision and stopped against a guardrail.

Police charged Mr. Brisbone with failure to stop for a red traffic signal. He was not injured, police said.
