State championships on today

Despite sporadic school closings around the state today, the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association's state championship basketball games will go on as scheduled at the University of Maryland, College Park (boys) and UMBC (girls).

Most state schools adhere to a policy that forbids practice and games when school is closed, but through the urging of MPSSAA Executive Secretary Ned Sparks, local superintendents with teams in the finals have granted special permission to play the games.

Sparks said the games will go on as scheduled at 3, 5, 7 and 9 p.m. at each site.

"It's a local issue and all the superintendents had to be contacted and asked to grant special permission if school is to be closed in their county again," said Rick Wiles, Anne Arundel County coordinator of physical education.

Wiles requested permission for No. 9 Meade to play in its first 4A boys final at 9 p.m. at Cole Field House against Largo of Prince George's County, and for No. 2 Old Mill to play top-ranked Western in the 4A girls final at 5 p.m. at UMBC.

"Our superintendent [C. Berry Carter] granted permission for our schools to play and most of the other superintendents fell in line," Wiles said.
